If there is a better Irish whiskey out there, I dare you to put it up to the Midleton ‘Barry Crockett Legacy’ Single Pot. Hi, it’s mid-March and we’ve got Irish whiskey on our minds.
It has been said that Midleton essentially created Irish whiskey. Born from the lifeblood and aspirations of the Murphy family in 1825, they have continually forged ahead in establishing themselves as the premier Irish whiskey producer.
Single Pot Still whiskey is unique to Ireland in general, and to the Midleton Distillery. It is regarded as the quintessential style of Irish whiskey. Made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and then triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills, pot still whiskeys are characterized by full, complex flavors and a wonderful, creamy mouthfeel.
Midleton is now a brand name synonymous with critical acclaim - Both for its annual vintage release of Midleton Very Rare and with its limited releases of Midleton Single Pot Still Whiskeys. Midleton added its first permanent Very Rare Barry Crockett Legacy single pot still Irish Whiskey to its range in 2011.
Named after Barry Crockett, a second-generation master distiller, Very Rare Barry Crockett Legacy represents a selection of pot still whiskeys matured in American bourbon barrels, with a small contribution from a pot still distillate matured in an unseasoned American barrel.
As a tribute to the man who is inextricably linked to the Midleton distillery and who has more than anyone, shaped the renowned Midleton style, Barry Crockett Legacy displays a distinctive pot still complexity, yet is refined and poised on the finish.
With over 30 awards received to date, this is a whiskey that truly embodies its name. In 2016 it was named the “Best Irish Blended Pot Still Whiskey” at The Irish Whiskey Awards.
Given the Midleton’s exceptional quality, I couldn’t help but smile when I saw several cocktail recipes on their website that incorporate their whiskeys. I can’t imagine mixing the Barry Crockett Legacy with anything other than my taste buds, and perhaps an ice cube. However, if cocktails are your thing (and you believe in luck), you might want to try The Fortuna.
As Midleton tells it, it is named after the Greek Goddess, Tyche, who stands for good luck and fortune. She is usually depicted holding nuts, berries and fruitcake, which are all noted in the Barry Crockett Legacy. Combining these ingredients brings out the citrus and sweet mandarin notes of the whiskey.

2 dashes orange bitters

Sláinte! (to health) and may the road rise up to meet you.
